South Pacific

The largest of earth’s oceans, the South Pacific contains some 20,000 to 30,000 islands and conjures up images of palm trees, blissful relaxation and warm water teeming with marine life.

The islands located south of the Tropic of Cancer are traditionally grouped into the divisions of Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia. The islands are either made up of volcanos (which tend to be bigger) or reefs and atolls (which are smaller and infertile).

While it may seem all the islands are the same with white sand beaches and warm, turquoise coloured waters; there is actually great variety between them with no two the same in terms of scenery and culture. With a year round warm, tropical climate, the South Pacific is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing beach holiday with a touch of culture and a bit of adventure. With plenty of water sports on offer including paddle boarding, jet skiing, kayaking, sailing and surfing, world-class diving and snorkelling, lush mountains and jungles to explore, volcanoes to climb, golf, yoga and plenty of day spas; on the Pacific islands you can do as little or as much as you like.

With a number of major airlines flying to the islands, inter-island flights can be done with Fiji Airways, Air New Zealand, Air Tahiti Nui, Air Vanuatu, Air Rarotonga and Air Calédonie. Enjoy a serenely spectacular break on one island or a decadent break visiting a couple. Transport between many of the islands within a single country can also be done by seaplane, speedboat and inter-island ferry. Getting around on the islands is best done by taxi, local bus or by hiring a car, moped, push bike or kayak. The South Pacific Ocean is a popular spot for cruise ships out of Australia to visit and offers a great way to visit a few different islands in a short amount of time.

As far as an action-packed adventure or a relaxing, flop and drop holiday go, the islands of the South Pacific are difficult to top for their accessibility, diversity and natural beauty – all available within a broad range of holiday budgets.
